Strings Program

Students have the opportunity to participate in 5th and 6th grade orchestra, middle school orchestra, and high school orchestra.


Beginning (5th and 6th grade) Orchestra:
Potential orchestra students and their parents will have the opportunity to attend an informational meeting and instrument showing in the spring of the student's fourth grade year.  This will allow time for students and parents to make decisions about instrument purchase/rental, and for students to become familiar with their instruments.  This year, this meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in the band room.  All students and parents interested are encouraged to attend.  Those planning on enrolling in orchestra are required to attend this meeting.  The director will supply useful information about the program, and a local music store representative will be on hand to show instruments and answer questions.


Orchestra (All Levels)

Grading policies, expectations, and consequences are consistent with the general principles outlined in the instrumental music handbook.  There are a few items that are specific to the strings program:

EQUIPMENT NEEDS 

The following equipment is required for all string classes: 

1. Instrument

2. Pencil 

3. Cake of rosin 

4. Shoulder pads for violins and violas 

5. Soft cleaning cloth (preferably 100% cotton) 

6. Rock stops for cellos 

All cases should be clearly labeled with the student’s name and 

school.  DO NOT MARK OR ETCH ON THE INSTRUMENT ITSELF.

STEP-UP PROGRAM

Because students may need smaller or larger instruments depending on their physical maturity and size, the music department is partnering with the local music store to offer a "Step-up Program."  Through this program, students may purchase a smaller instrument in beginning orchestra, and graduate to larger instruments as necessary at a greatly reduced price.  Details on this program are given at the April 17 meeting.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

October 30, 2012 @ 6:00 p.m. - 5-12 strings concert in the high school auditorium.
March 21, 2013 - Regional strings/orchestra festival in Dodge City. Times TBA.
April 16, 2013 @ 6:00 p.m.- 5-12 strings concert in the high school auditorium.
